How to hire on Fiverr: a buyer's guide
Fiverr works as a prepaid marketplace: you pay when the order is created, funds are held by Fiverr's payment providers, and the seller delivers before funds clear. You can hire by browsing gigs and ordering directly, or by posting a brief through Mira, Fiverr's AI headhunter, which builds a job description and presents a shortlist of qualified matches.
This guide walks through the complete hiring flow — defining scope, choosing the right entry point, writing requirements that attract good work, evaluating sellers on evidence not promises, managing the order through delivery and revisions, and using the Resolution Center if something goes wrong. Platform mechanics are attributed to Fiverr; hiring craft is practical advice.

Define the task before you search
A clear scope saves time and money. Write the outcome you need — 'a 90-second explainer video with voice-over and captions' — not the process. List specific deliverables (file formats, dimensions, word count), the deadline, and any hard constraints (brand guidelines, platform specs, regulatory requirements). If you cannot articulate the outcome, you are not ready to hire; spend time clarifying first.
Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. A common mistake buyers make is bundling unrelated tasks into one order ('logo + website + social media kit'), which attracts generalists instead of specialists. Split complex work into separate orders or use Milestones for phased delivery. Fiverr's Milestones feature requires a basic package of at least $100 and allows 2-5 milestones per Gig in eligible subcategories.
- Outcome: what done looks like (file, link, access, report).
- Deliverables: exact formats, specs, quantities.
- Deadline: calendar date or business days from order.
- Constraints: brand guide, platform, compliance, access needs.
- Budget range: helps sellers propose the right package.
Browse gigs or post a brief via Mira
Two entry points exist. Browsing gigs works when you know the category and can evaluate portfolios yourself. Search by keyword, filter by level, budget, delivery time, and seller language. The Briefs system was fully retired and replaced by Mira, Fiverr's AI headhunter. Mira asks follow-up questions, builds a job description, and presents a shortlist of qualified sellers. You review the matches, select up to five to invite, and they respond with tailored offers within 72 hours.
Use browsing for defined, repeatable tasks (logo, translation, data entry, code review). Use Mira when the scope is fuzzy, the category is unfamiliar, or you want sellers to propose the approach. Mira is desktop and mobile web only; not on iOS/Android apps. There is no cost to post a brief; you pay only when you place an order.
Browse: search keyword → filter category/level/budget/delivery time → review gig portfolio and reviews → order or contact seller.
Mira: click 'Post a brief' → describe need in plain language → answer Mira's follow-up questions → review shortlist → invite up to 5 sellers → compare tailored offers → order.
Write requirements that get good work
After ordering, the requirements page is where you give the seller everything they need. Answer every question the seller asks — these are marked required or optional by the seller. Attach reference files (brand guide, content drafts, data sources, access credentials via secure method). Define acceptance criteria: 'I will accept when the video is 90 seconds ±5 seconds, includes captions in SRT format, and uses the provided voice-over track.'
Fiverr's order guide states that buyers pay upfront; funds are held and released to the seller after delivery and the clearance period. The seller sees the requirements immediately after order creation. Incomplete requirements are the top cause of delays and revision disputes. If you need to share sensitive credentials, use Fiverr's in-order file sharing (up to 1 GB per file) rather than external links.
| Requirement type | What to include | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Text input | Exact copy, keywords, tone guidelines | Product description, 150 words, friendly tone |
| File upload | Source files, brand assets, data | Logo AI file, brand PDF, CSV with 500 rows |
| Access credentials | Shared via Fiverr in-order files | WordPress admin, Figma edit link, API key |
| Acceptance criteria | Measurable done definition | Responsive on mobile, loads under 3s, passes Lighthouse |
Compare sellers on evidence, not promises
Fiverr displays seller level (New, Level 1, Level 2, Top Rated), response time (visible to buyers), public reviews with star ratings and written feedback, and portfolio projects. Level means the seller met published thresholds for orders, earnings, rating, response rate, and unique clients over a period. Top Rated adds a manual review by Fiverr's evaluation team. Pro is a separate curated tier with a blue checkmark for vetted expertise.
Check recent reviews for relevance to your task — a five-star review for 'logo design' does not predict 'technical documentation' quality. Review the portfolio for work similar to your scope; generic portfolio pieces (template sites, stock illustrations) are less predictive than client-specific case studies. The vetting guide on this site details a three-question scope check to ask before ordering.
Manage the order through delivery and revisions
After you place the order, the seller works and delivers through the order page. You have three days to review (eight days for Milestone orders). If you take no action, the order auto-completes. You can request revisions within the revision count included in the package; additional revisions may cost extra. Fiverr's help article states that for standard orders, the client has three days to request a revision or accept; for Milestone orders, eight days per delivery.
Communicate through the Fiverr inbox — order messages appear there for orders placed on or after October 21, 2025. Keep all files and decisions on the platform. If the seller delivers work that does not match the requirements, request a revision with specific feedback. If the seller is unresponsive or the work is fundamentally misaligned, the Resolution Center is the next step.
Handle problems through the platform
Fiverr's Resolution Center is the first step for disputes: late delivery, quality mismatch, scope disagreement, or cancellation requests. Both parties can propose a resolution (partial refund, extension, revision, cancellation). Fiverr Support will not act on quality disputes where the buyer did not first raise the issue with the seller through the Resolution Center. Completed orders can be reviewed for cancellation by Support up to 14 days after completion (7 days for Hourly Weekly Reports) for misconduct or Terms of Service violations.
Chargebacks (bank disputes) after delivery violate the Payment Terms and can disable your account. Funds are held by the payment provider during a dispute. The buyer protection mechanics are documented in Fiverr's Payment Terms and Resolution Center articles. If you need to cancel, the funds return to your Fiverr Balance, not automatically to your card.
Where Seller OS helps
Seller OS is built for sellers, but buyers who also sell can use the same workspace to track their own purchasing — client records for sellers you hire repeatedly, order deadlines, and message drafts for follow-ups. The Gig Builder can reverse-engineer a competitor's Gig structure if you are hiring to learn a category.
Seller OS does not place orders, post briefs, or communicate with sellers on your behalf. A person performs every final action on Fiverr. It also does not guarantee seller quality or delivery outcomes.

How to Hire on Fiverr questions
What is the difference between browsing gigs and posting a brief on Fiverr?
Browsing lets you search gigs, filter by category and seller level, and order directly. Posting a brief via Mira (Fiverr's AI headhunter) has you describe the need in plain language; Mira asks follow-up questions, builds a job description, and presents a shortlist of matched sellers who send tailored offers. Briefs were retired and replaced by Mira.
When do I pay on Fiverr?
You pay upfront when the order is created. Fiverr holds the funds and releases them to the seller after delivery and the standard 14-day clearance period (7 days for Top Rated sellers). If the order is canceled, funds return to your Fiverr Balance.
What if the seller delivers work that does not match my requirements?
Request a revision through the order page with specific feedback on what is missing. Packages include a set revision count. If the seller is unresponsive or the work is fundamentally misaligned, open a case in the Resolution Center. Fiverr Support will not act on quality disputes unless you used the Resolution Center first.
Can I get a refund to my original payment method if I cancel?
Fiverr's help center states that on cancellation, 'the funds paid will be returned to the Buyer's Fiverr Balance' — not automatically to your card. You can then use the balance for future orders or withdraw it per Fiverr's withdrawal rules.
